In 1925, Gill received his first commission from Monotype’s Stanley Morison for a crisp, serifed typeface. Gill would continue his experiments in Catholic sufism from this village. ![]() Eventually, a few years later, he moved to Ditching in Sussex, founding a community of artisans that became one of the most significant locations of craft production in British history. His expertise in masonry translated well to cutting letters for printing, and he started to be associated with the small press movement.
